Richard III

Richard III

Among Shakespeare’s histories, KING RICHARD THE THIRD is the most violent, sensual, vivid, and hilarious.

The hunchbacked Richard III is a gleeful villain, slaughtering his way through family members and friends, allowing nothing to stand in the way of his bloody path to the throne. Although the play ultimately depicts a tumultuous time in England’s history, when the fate of her crown was truly in jeopardy, Shakespeare’s narrative is predominantly a domestic squabble par excellence.

Claustrophobic family wrangling, mercurial twists of fate, astonishing seductions and splendidly selfish maneuverings make this an unforgettable night in the theatre.

The role of Richard is one of the greatest challenges in Shakespeare. He is a chameleon, changing masks to advance his purposes. He can feign tenderheartedness one moment, then turn around and order the murder of his innocent little nephews, the princes—and shortly after, attempt to persuade their mother to let him marry their sister, his niece. The action of the play accelerates until it becomes a virtual waterfall of blood, and yet Richard is perhaps the most charming villain you’ll ever meet.

Our production will be historically set, taking place in the late 15th century when Richard ruled for two tumultuous years. The last English king to die in battle, Richard’s passing marked the end of the Plantagenet dynasty and the rise of the Tudors.
