Sex in the City and Shakespeare?

We know Shakespeare’s work is still very relevant to modern day society, that’s why his literature is still taught to our children and why it is some of the most produced theatre in the world. The themes of Shakespeare’s plays center around human nature and emotion – the stories of love, jealousy, revenge, ambition, passion and greed that we see frequently in Hollywood are just as prevalent in Shakespeare’s work from over 400 years ago.

A desire for all things material, a passion for fashion, chasing the “wrong guy” and the insecurity that comes as an accessory to that lifestyle, existed long before Carrie Bradshaw and friends burst into our lives. The story line of A Midsummer Night’s Dream and some of the characters within the play bare some striking resemblances to the lives of the fabulous four many of us have flocked to see on the big screen over the last 10 days.

So that leads me to the question…If Shakespeare’s work is ultimately about ourselves, why do we sometimes find it difficult to understand???

This is one of the challenges that Jan Powell, our new artistic director along with Michael Walling our guest director, aim to overcome this season.

If Shakespeare theatre is done correctly (his work has always been about theatre and never about reading a text book in a classroom) then you don’t even notice the variation in language. Shakespeare, after all was a great storyteller and we plan to recreate his work in a way that brings the characters and plot to life in a beautiful setting.

And peaking out from beneath the costume, you might see a pair of Manolo’s!
